I never expected a bug to make me feel small, but Monster Hunter Wilds did exactly that when I first read the Monster Field Guide entry for the Godbug. These endemic creatures are not just another crafting ingredient with legs; they live for 1,000 years. One thousand years! Can you imagine crawling across the same stone wall while generations of hunters sharpen their weapons and retire? That thought hit me harder than any tempered monster. If you find one and catch it, you receive Godbug Essence, the key ingredient for Cleanser and Lifepowder. In 2026, that essence is still one of the most useful things I keep in my item pouch. godbug-hunting-in-monster-hunter-wilds-a-1000-year-chase-image-0

But where do you actually find these ancient little tanks? I asked myself that for hours before I learned to slow down and scan the walls. Godbugs do not sprint across open plains. They cling. They wait. They make you work for the privilege.

Where to Find Godbugs in Windward Plains

One of the best places to find Godbugs in the Windward Plains—which also has Herbivore Shells—is the valley between Areas 16 and 17. You will find them attached to the stone walls of the valley. The first one is west of the 16 text on the location's map, near a Wedge Beetle and a Blackened Fossil.

The second is to the right of the entrance of the valley. The next is opposite the green emblems on the map that mark the Vigormantle Bugs and Herb. These are easy to spot once you know what you are looking for. They have grey shells with black antennae and purple facial features. You can either grab the Godbug for its Godbug Essence with the Circle/B button or take it with the Capture Net. I usually grab it directly when I am in a hurry, but the Capture Net feels kinder, if you can call a net kind.

Where to Find Godbugs in Scarlet Forest

The perfect spot to find Godbugs in the Scarlet Forest is in Area 16. You can reach this spot by fast traveling to the Area 17 campsite and then leaping off a big gap near a narrow alleyway section. I remember missing that leap twice because I was staring at the canopy instead of my stamina bar. Do not be like me.

Look at the tree stumps in the area. One Godbug is east of some Dung—which can be used to make a useful Dung Pod—and nearby the Weathered Ruins that are south of it. Opposite this spot, up a rocky hill, you will see another Godbug with its blue exterior on some vines.

Look to the right and another Godbug is there on the opposite vine. Go up the first climbing wall from this spot and then look right. You will see another Godbug on a tree near a vine bridge that goes up. The last Godbug in this specific section is on the right after going up the bridge. You will see the Godbug crawling on a stone wall near the waterfall.

That route sounds complicated, and it is. But is there anything better than a treasure hunt that ends with a bug older than most kingdoms? I do not think so.

Why Godbug Essence Matters

Godbug Essence is not a trophy. It is a tool. It can be used to make Cleanser and Lifepowder, two items that can help you in battle. Lifepowder has saved my hunting party more times than I can count. When a teammate is stunned, burning, or one hit away from carting, a well-timed Lifepowder turns panic into a comeback. Cleanser is just as practical when blights and status effects start stacking up.

In 2026, with more hunters than ever roaming the Forbidden Lands, support items still decide fights. Do you want to be the hunter who forgot to restock, or the hunter who saves the quest with one green cloud? I know which one I want to be.

Location Area What to Look For
Windward Plains Valley between Areas 16 and 17 Stone walls, near Wedge Beetle and Blackened Fossil
Windward Plains Valley entrance Right of the entrance, opposite Vigormantle Bugs and Herb
Scarlet Forest Area 16 Tree stumps, Dung, Weathered Ruins, vines, rocky hill
Scarlet Forest Area 16 Climbing wall, vine bridge, waterfall stone wall

Other Creatures Worth Catching

While you are in the Scarlet Forest, you can also find Dapperwings that will help you during a side quest. Other handy creatures you can find in Monster Hunter Wilds include the Ember Rufflizards. I used to ignore endemic life unless it dropped a rare material, but now I keep my Capture Net ready. Why? Because a Godbug is not just a bug. It is a 1,000-year survivor, and for a few seconds, it is mine to catch.

So next time you ride past a grey shell with black antennae and purple features, stop. Look up. Look left. Look behind the vine. The Godbug has been waiting for a thousand years. Can you really afford to walk past it?
